2021! We made it to the New Year in one piece. It’s the beginning of the year, but did you know with January we also get a little known holiday for homeowners? That’s right, on January 10th it is 'National Cut Your Energy Costs Day'. 'National Cut Your Energy Costs Day' is about finding useful ways to save money and overall conserve energy. So come along with us and lets pick up some fun tricks to help you save some money! Tip 1: Say Hello To LED LightsDid you know the average American family spends an average $2,200 a year on energy bills? Let's start with the basics. Do you see all those lightbulbs around your house? Well LED bulbs are a better bang for your buck. Though more expensive than your regular lightbulb, LED lights are known to last three times as long as your regular lightbulb and consume less power. Tip 2: Think Long TermSet some money aside to replace old appliances. Older appliances are not always energy efficient. Maybe it’s time to replace that old dishwasher, fridge or oven for a newer model. Remember: think long term. You might be buying something new, but it’ll pay off with the money you’ll be saving annually moving forward. With a bit of research, find the biggest offender in your household and begin your new energy efficient lifestyle by replacing it first. Tip 3: Control Your Home's TemperatureGet a thermostat you don’t have to keep checking. By buying a programmable thermostat you can control the temperature in your house all hours of the day. New thermostat models even have apps on your smart phone to adjust the temperature. Does the air conditioner really need to be on all day long while you’re at work and no one else is home? Program it to turn on one hour before you walk through the door, so you’re greeted with cool refreshing air. Same thing goes with heating the place up. Tip 4: Stay On Top Of Your PlumbingThis one is a no brainer for all of us. Check your water usage. Wasting water is not cool, for your energy bill and for planet Earth as a whole. So what can you do to stop this from happening? Do a check of your visible pipes every 6 months or so to catch any leaks before they become a bigger problem and schedule a pipe inspection with us at least once every two years. Also, check that you don’t have any faucets that drip even when you’ve shut them off - and while we’re on the topic of faucets, turn the water off when you’re brushing your teeth.
