We love our pets here at Metro-Flow Plumbing and understand that the Texas summer heat can be brutal for our furry friends. Dogs and cats can get seriously injured even when they’re wandering around our backyards. It is important to keep them in mind on especially hot days.
Today we are going to go over a few things we can do to help them out when it gets relatively hot, such as signs we can look out for and how to be a little more proactive with their care during the summer months. Give Them Some Shade.
This one is a no brainer, when letting them go free in your backyard make sure they have an area available to them that offers plenty of shade, so they have somewhere to retreat to when the heat gets to be too much. The shade will help lower their body heat.
Hydration. Hydration. Hydration.
Make sure to provide plenty of cool water for our four legged friends by keeping it in the above mentioned shade. Dogs and cats, like us, need plenty of fluids to survive and be healthy. On especially hot days, keep the water coming and they’ll appreciate you for it.
Keep an eye out for excessive panting and thick drooling.
These are clear signs that your pet could be very close to a heat stroke. Other signs include vomiting and diarrhea. It is also good to keep in mind for owners of pets with flat faces such as pugs, these animals cannot pant as effectively as other dogs and should be kept in well ventilated and cool areas as much as possible. Same goes with cats that have this facial feature.
Never shave THEIR coat.
A trim during the summer months is recommended, but no one should ever shave their pet thinking it’ll help it with the heat. Coats help dogs and cats regulate body temperature, without them they are even more exposed to the harsher effects of the sun such as sunburns. If you opt to shave them, please use pet-friendly sunscreen. Contact your veterinarian for more information.
Keep Their Paws Off Hot Asphalt.
We love walking our pets, but be vigilant of the hot asphalt on some roads as well as the time you choose to walk them. If exposed to it for a considerate amount of time their paws will get burns and seriously injure the animal.
Don't Leave Your Pet Behind
Never, ever leave your pets unattended in a parked vehicle. Even with the windows cracked open the heat inside the car can reach dangerous temperatures.
Never leave a pet unattended around a pool.
Dogs (and yes cats) can swim, but some can’t do it very well. A pet that isn’t familiar with a family pool's exit can get disoriented, panic, and even drown. We want to treat them like we would any other small member of the family and give them the proper attention they deserve.
Visit the Veterinarian.
Finally, keep your dogs and cats protected from pests and parasites such as ticks, fleas, heart worms, and mosquitos. A vet visit before the summer heat kicks in to make sure everything is a-okay with our furry companions might save them from certain complications later on. Make sure your pet is up to date with their shots and treatments. This is beneficial for you as well, as a parasite left untreated in an animal can sometimes make its way to you.

Happy Independence Day! We are excited to celebrate the 4th of July with you during what has already been a very hot summer. You may be planning to spend the day with friends and family, some which you probably haven’t seen in a while, continue to master the art of the American BBQ, and of course shoot some fireworks into the night sky before retiring into your home for a fun movie to watch with the family.
We here at Metro-Flow continue to work tirelessly to provide the best plumbing services we can to the Dallas area and are happy to assist you and yours in any way we can with plumbing routine checks and emergencies. We pride ourselves in our thorough and speedy service in case of a plumbing mishap. Electric Appliances
During summer, we tend to rely on our appliances to keep us comfortable through the hot days. The wear and tear can cause some of them to malfunction right when you need them the most. One, if not, the most important one during this hot climate time is our air conditioning (A/C) unit. Make sure your A/C system is running smoothly and cost efficiently when you need it most.
The U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting your A/C to 78 degrees during the summer to keep cool and avoid an unusually high electric bill. Remember that setting the thermostat to cooler temperatures will not cool your home faster, you just have to be a little patient with it. Certain other appliances that may act up, such as your dishwasher or refrigerator, have water lines that may break or need replacement. If so, don’t hesitate to call us at 214-328-7371 and we’ll be happy to get one of our certified and insured plumbing technicians out there to fix your plumbing problem. Protect the grill masters
Please remember to stay hydrated while you throw some burgers on the grill. The summer heat can sneak up on you and water is recommended as it is both healthy and plentiful (though we totally understand cracking a cold one due to the circumstances).
As the sun goes down and you got the family gathered around at a safe distance from the firework display, remember to use caution when handling fireworks. If fireworks are the projectile kind, face them away from the crowds of people and always make sure they’re standing upright to take off properly. Mishandling of fireworks can cause serious burns and unintentional fires. Get the popcorn ready
If you want to keep the festivities going why not find a movie to watch to help you celebrate the holidays. Below are some of our favorites (and all 3 are family friendly!)
Captain America: The First Avenger (PG-13), 2011 What better way to celebrate the 4th of July than with the Star-Spangled hero himself, Captain America. This first entry in the Captain America trilogy explores Cap’s origins fighting in World War 2. This entry in Marvel’s ever expanding cinematic universe leaves you wanting more as we follow Steve Rogers from his neighborhood in Brooklyn to fighting the good fight overseas when his country needed him most.
Independence Day (PG-13), 1996
This movie is literally called Independence Day and an instant classic and staple of 90s action movies. Will Smith is at his best fighting alien invaders. We also really enjoy Bill Pullman’s performance and speech as President Thomas J. Whitmore: “We will not go quietly into the night…Today we celebrate our Independence Day!”. Chills every time.
The Sandlot (PG), 1993
Is there anything more American than our favorite pastime? Scottie Smalls moves into a new town and befriends some local boys who share a passion for baseball. Between adventures during a hot summer month, the boys play the sport in the neighborhood sandlot. The personalities within the group is why we think this movie is so memorable and you’ll find yourself quoting this movie years after you’ve watched it! “You’re Killing Me, Smalls!!!”
