That is the first question that goes through our head when we see yellow water coming out of the faucet, but you shouldn’t be alarmed for your health. Yellow, brown, or reddish-brown water is caused by a high concentration of iron and manganese; both harmless to the human body. Some of the water color may be iron bacteria from the iron found in your pipes. Another reason for water coloration could be that your water heater tank is rusting from the inside or be a sign that your water heater is about to start leaking.
Even though your health is safe, your clothes and furniture are not. This tinted water may cause hard-to-remove stains on your clothes and furniture. Should this happen, just use a rust remover to get rid of the stain. Chlorine should not be used to remove stains caused by tinted water, as the chemicals in the chlorine, and those from iron and manganese may react adversely. It is important to note however, that while tinted water is harmless to the human body, it will damage vegetables cooked in it; changing their taste and color. Needless to say, it is better to be safe than sorry. Should you see this happening to your water, call your Dallas plumbers at Metro-Flow Plumbing and we’ll be happy to help you solve this problem.
