Happy Thanksgiving! The time to give thanks has come once again. A time where we all sit around the same table and share a meal together with friends and family. Though it may be not be the same as previous years, it will still be filled with love, either in-person or virtually. Of course, with the abundance of food it’s good to remember some of the tips we’ve learned along the way. Like disposing of excess grease properly by putting it in a plastic container and freezing it until you’re ready to properly dispose of it. You don’t want to just pour it down the drain where it can cause some serious pipe blockage. With that being said: fire up that oven, baste that turkey, keep that one aunt away from the kitchen, and tell that one uncle to go easy on the cerveza. It’s time for: Thanksgiving Movies and their Pie Pairings for that post dinner food coma! Because let's face it, you have room for a little more. Scent of a woman (For The Adults)Scent of a Woman (1992) Al Pacino won an Oscar for his portrayal of suave, blind Army Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade who spends Thanksgiving weekend with college student Charlie Simms played by Chris O’Donnell. Along the way, Slade teaches Simms a few things while getting a new lease on life himself. Hoo-ah! Oh yeah… parents, you’re going to want to check this out. Pair with: Pecan Pie (a la Mode), like Frank Slade the pecan pie might have a rougher exterior, but has many layers to it. From the pecans to the soft pie beneath them, sweeten up the deal with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Fantastic Mr. Fox (for the kids)Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) Director Wes Anderson is at it again with his quirky and unique approach to storytelling. This time in a fantastic stop motion animation movie headlined by George Clooney’s take on Mr. Fox. Follow the adventure of Mr. Fox and his animal friends as they fight for their homes against some angry local farmers. This heartfelt story is good for everyone, but the kids will absolutely love it. Pair with: Pumpkin Pie, this signature Thanksgiving dessert is the perfect pairing to go along with the movie, both in appearance and sweetness. Planes, Trains and Automobiles (for the Family)Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) Join Neal Page, a businessman played by the one and only Steve Martin, as he desperately tries to get home to his family for Thanksgiving. When Neal’s path crosses that of traveling salesman Del Griffith, played by the late and great John Candy, hilarity ensues as the odd man duo tries just about every mode of transportation to get Neal home in time. Can Neal make it home for Thanksgiving? Most importantly, can Neal survive traveling with his new travel buddy? Pair with: Apple Pie (a la Mode), because what’s more American than Steve Martin and Apple Pie? Sweeten the deal with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Fall is the perfect time of year for outdoor activities with the family. However, while you’re home it’s also not totally a bad idea to want to lay back, relax, put on a football game and see how many meals we can squeeze out of our days. This however means more dishes, and more dishes means far more use for one of the best appliances in the our homes, the dishwasher. Of course the first thing we should do before putting any dirty plates inside our dishwashers is scrape off excess food. A garbage disposal is perfect for this (refer to our previous blog here for what you can put in a garbage disposal and what you shouldn’t). Next, make sure you’re loading the dishwasher the correct way. Plates have to face a certain way in the lower rack (facing the water sprayer arm below), plastic dishwasher friendly containers can go on the top rack, and glasses are good to be washed as long as they’re dishwasher safe. Some machines are known to break fine glass if they’re not sturdy enough. The most important thing people don’t take into account when owning a dishwasher is to manually clean it, “but it’s a dishwasher! Doesn’t it just clean itself?”. The simple answer is no. Things such as soap residue, food particles, and gunk build up need to be wiped away once in a while. This will prevent the drain connection on your dishwasher to remain clean. Another hot tip, no pun intended, is to turn your sink on until the water is warm. This will guarantee your dishwasher's first load will be washed with warm water. This is important during the winter months that are just around the corner. Fall in Dallas is beautiful, make sure to visit some of our state parks to really get a feel for it. Then later when you get home enjoy a warm meal, put that dishwasher to good use and enjoy a football game with your loved ones. Happy Eating and Lets Go Cowboys! November is finally here! As we embrace Fall and the temperatures drop we want to make sure our kitchen pipes are in optimal shape. We sometimes make the mistake of dropping just about anything down the garbage disposal, but did you know this could clog your pipes somewhere down the line? Grease and Waste that is hard to break up with the garbage disposal will sometimes accumulate and clog inside your kitchen sink pipes. This causes not only water to not flow, but can make unwanted odors come back out. The simplest way to prevent a clog from happening is to dispose of scraps in the waste basket and some scraps, that can be handled, in the garbage disposal. We have compiled a lists of garbage disposal do’s and don’ts that we hope you'll find helpful: Food wASTE FOR GARBAGE DISPOSAL
FOOD WASTE for the waste basket
